Amazing Coffee. Authentic Connections.

As a coffee connoisseur, it only seemed appropriate to start my blog off about coffee. The small town of Aubrey, TX is growing fast, but still lacked convenient coffee options. Until now.

Down Main Street, parked right out front of the police annex, is Sister Friends Coffee Bar, run by local Providence Village resident, Karen Davis. Her goal: to bring PV commuters a “break from the rush” of traffic and life with carefully curated coffee selections and snacks.

In under five months, what began as a 20-year-old dream turned into a reality after Karen attended a woman’s retreat. Swapping stories by a campfire, someone believed in the ideas of this strong woman from Seattle, who missed the small, unique coffee shops around every corner. Empowered with an investor, Karen went all-in.

She quit her job at Bloomfield Homes and bought a trailer.

Then the hard work began…

Making the perfect cup of coffee begins with the best beans and roasting process. Karen teamed up with world renowned roaster, Jodi Wieser, who owns a coffee consulting company right here in DFW. With beans sourced from Guatemala, Ethiopia, and Brazil, the two women worked together to create the flavors Karen envisioned for Sister Friends.

Great coffee also means great ingredients. For her syrups, Karen turned to a small company out of Sisters, Oregon called Holy Kakow! Sharing a name with the town is fun, but Holy Kakow offers organic flavored and chocolate syrups of the highest quality. They dub their chocolate sauce “barista-friendly”, a slightly thinner sauce which makes it easier to blend with espresso for a full flavor latte. Sister Friends also offers oat and almond milk for dairy alternatives – and the best part: the chocolate is dairy free! No more avoiding that mocha craving; Sister Friends to the rescue!

Iced Samoa Mocha Latte with whipped cream, mocha drizzle, and coconut flakes.

Coffee needs a friend…

After Karen made the perfect drinks, she needed to find the perfect snacks to accompany them. Calling on the community for help, Karen was turned on to another local small business called The Little Piglet Bakery.

Nestled in the small town of Pilot Point, The Little Piglet Bakery offers a large variety of allergen-free treats. All of their goodies are 100% Vegan, and they even offer a number of gluten-free items as well.

Up for grabs at the Sister Friends Coffee Bar is a handpicked selection of sweets to pair beautifully with a quality cup of coffee. The most notable of these is the amazing Pocket Pies! These are adult Pop-Tarts, y’all, and simply to die for. It’s the perfect breakfast to go with a smooth Americano on your morning commute.

For a more classic combo, there’s also Coffee Cake and Banana Bread to accompany a silky smooth Cold Brew or a decadent Iced Mocha Latte on those warm spring and summer days, which are soon to come. As far as tastes go, Karen picks her partners well!

What’s in a name…

With her drinks and treat in hand, it was time to pick a name.

The inspiration for the coffee bar’s name comes from her daughters. Karen’s close friend, Hannah, has a daughter who is best friends with her two twin girls, and she affectionately calls them her “sister friends”. For Karen, it also represents her views towards her fellow women: supportive and uplifting.

Karen’s dive into a new career is truly inspiring for anyone thinking, “Maybe I should try something different?”. When it came down to it, she asked herself, “Will I regret not doing this?” and was honest with herself with a resounding, YES! After living in Aubrey for three years, she saw a need in her community and with an opportunity to fill that gap, she took it. She learned through trial and error, growing to know herself and her business along the way.

Sister Friends is open Monday-Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm, and on the occasional Saturday. Be sure to follow them on Facebook to keep track of openings, closings, and special events!
